Discworld

Adventure Game (1996)
Download Discworld
The fact that this game seems rather unknown in the gaming world surprises me. During the play of this game I personally felt really left behind when I realized that no one ever told me about this game or gave me a hint to go play this game.

This game is an adventure in a world called "discworld", which was described in the books by Terry Pratchett. You're a wizard, Rincewind, who is on a mission to look for a dragon and get it out of the city.

However, that mission won't be very easy and will be followed by several other missions. It takes alot of "way too logical thinking", which makes the step to walkthroughs very small. Though, I recommend you don't, because it can really spoil your game and the fun you have playing it.

Yes, that's what it is, it's a fun game to play. With one of the actors from Monty Python as the main character's vocal and the humour he puts into it, you can really laugh your balls off playing this game.

The spoken dialogues can be very tiring and sometimes even boring to you.

This little gem of a game has been around for years, although few people seem to be familiar with it. This is possibly because of the complexity of the quests. Many people seem to get stuck in the early stages and just give up completely. That’s when they miss out on the beautifully rendered graphics, the overall fun of the game-play and the absurd and, certainly at times, hilarious storyline.

Those familiar with the early works of Terry Pratchett will be in Discworld heaven, although an intimate knowledge of the books is not always an advantage. The items needed for some quests seem totally random and can come together in most unexpected ways (worms, popcorn, hair rollers, dragon detectors etc.). However, the joy of seeing so many of our favourite characters so lovingly represented is well worth any of the many run-ins with logic gone askew.

You play the game as the lead character of Rincewind, the most inept wizard on the entire planet (or Disc, as is the case) and are trying to rid the city of an unwelcome dragon. Rincewind is voiced by Monty Python’s Eric Idle, and if you are a fan you will see this as being some of his most joyous work.

The reassuring and hilarious presence of Idle’s voice is fortunate, as you will need to talk to every single character in the game, often time and time again in your attempts to glean useful snippets of information. You must point and click your way through a bizarre itinerary and do so with undivided attention to detail, as some of the objects you are attempting to gain can be difficult to see, let alone click.

My advice is, once you’ve played the game for a while and enjoyed the jokes, the characters and the interactions, get yourself on-line and find yourself a walkthrough. There must be plenty still kicking about. It is well worth it to finally reach the game finale and come to the undeniable and satisfying conclusion that you have stepped into a delightful paradoxical fantasy world and out the other side.

If you can complete even the first act of this game without a cheat by your side, my hat is off to you and you are surely a Wizard of the greatest magnitude.

This game is flash, fun, funny and fiendishly frustrating; but a must have for all Pratchett fans.

And if you’re not for some reason, a fan already, get yourself some books, have yourself a laugh then dive into this wonderful tribute to one of the most successful fantasy genres of our lifetimes.
