As in every title from the Space Quest series, you play Roger Wilco. This time it seems that the achievement to make is to become a StarCon captain. The game starts off with the last test to become a starship captain. When you pass that test you will become captain of your own Garbage Scow... Yeeha!
Of course, you will start a few garbage missions, as you are the captain of the Garbage Scow now. |

Later on, you will get in real trouble and it's up to you to get Roger out of this trouble.
It's a fun game with a nice touch of humour which makes you want to play the following titles too. Solutions to "puzzles" are not too hard to find, but it does mean you will have to get into Roger's mind completely, because most solutions are subject to his thoughts.
A nice game if you haven't played it yet, but I doubt it's the best of the entire Space Quest collection. |

I first played this game many years ago, but the memory of it has stuck with me. This game is of course a part of the space quest series, with your favorite hero/janitorial engineer Roger Wilco. This game really plays off of the Star Trek universe, with a nemesis that looks and acts an awful lot like Captain Kirk, if Captain Kirk was a douche. It's also the first game where you get to act in a leadership role - one of the best parts of the game is getting to know and loathe your team members as you pilot a garbage scow after passing the star fleet entrance exams. While the basis of the game is the same inventory-based deal as the previous games, the real draw here is the humor and humanity that's written into the games every line of dialogue. Setting courses for the ship gave me a real thrill (in so far as video games can give one a thrill and the whole conceit of away teams and transporters made me laugh.
Honestly, this is my favorite game in the series. While those of you who did not grow up with the VGA-style sierra games may find them to be lacking in the graphics department, and may find the music to be a little too synthesizer based for comfort, the joy of these sorts of puzzle-based adventures will be immediately clear to gamers of a certain age. As far as problems go, the game is simply too short - you can make of this criticism what you wish. In fact, the universe of Roger Wilco is probably what makes these games as great as they are - clearly the writers had a lot of fun creating it, and that fun comes through in the gameplay.
Compared to other sierra titles, such as Quest for Glory 4, the bug issues are minimal. This is a game to be enjoyed for its own sake - you will waste your limited time on this earth in playing it, and you will not regret it. Fun parts to watch out for - riding the space-age floor polisher at the academy; watching as your crew begins to tolerate and even respect you as you do your job; and seeing your nemesis get mutated are all worth the price of admission.
To sum up, this is a fantastic game that improves with age, but it is best enjoyed if you're already familiar with the Roger Wilco universe. So, not to plug Sierra games too obviously, you should probably invest in the complete series for full effect. So that's that - go clean up the galaxy! |
