Wizardry I : Proving Grounds of the Mad OVerlord, which RPG player doesn't know it?
Released over 20 years back in 1981, it was the first first-person dungeoncrawl, and a fine one aswell.
You had to create a party of six adventurers, and crawl your way trough ten levels of dungeon to confront the ultimate evil.
Werdna, the evil wizard.
It can be rather tough at times, since there were times I crawled back the the tavern with only one member still alive, and not even having enough money to fully heal him, letalone ressurect the others.

I enjoy playing these types of games because they do require some sort of strategy. I had started with Telengard for the Comador 64 way back in '85 when it required a cassette tape to load the game and that took 15 minutes. I then found Wizardry for Nintendo not actually realizing how old the game really was. It wasn't till recently I discovered that it came out shortly after I was born. I will continue with this and work my way through the series.
I was glad when I started playing this game. I first started creating characters and started the game. Not satisfied with my characters I created more and noticed that the random number they give you went up to nineteen. So I counted this and eventually got to a point where it gave me twenty five. Intrigued I spent hours perfecting my beginning characters.
I would then add a couple of them to my previous party and would go to the lower levels to level them up. This also took hours as when they are low level it does not save them from magic or breath weapons.
I also found that the items you collect on the first four levels is what get you to go forward in the game to the fifth level and below. When first starting out and having no maps it makes this very difficult, especially when you hit the dark areas.
So low and behold 15 years after discovering the game I get online to look for maps. They helped out immensely. Though I have yet to go any further than the fourth level right now I will eventually make it lower and thus further into the game. I will also make my way through the other 7 Wizardry games as the first had caught my attention from the start.
I am not sure if Wizardry was the first role play game to ever hit the PC, but it seems to be the basis for any RPG on the PC. It is also what programmers start with in school because of the variables involved. It gives the creator a lot to think about and to balance the game as to not make one side favored more than the other.
All in all, Wizardry should be anyone’s start into PC related RPG games. It gives them a taste of the adventure brought to the system. Though Wizardry is not graphically intensive by any means, it gives them an idea what would be going on if it were. |
