Paulie Python

Simulation Game (1993)
Download Paulie Python
Hmmm, well... Guess we can refer to the game snake for this one. It's quite nice to see that games like these can actually grab your attention and make you play like a madman.

Yes, you play a snake in this one. But it's not "just" a snake, it is Paulie Python! Not that it matters, as it still is just a snake. I mean, it doesn't'ave a voice of its own and it doesn't eat things normal snakes wouldn't do.

I guess we all know the classic snake games in which snakes eat melons and apples, well I'd rather call that weird.

Nah, Paulie rather eats mice. Lots of them. And you're about to help him get his mice and make sure Paulie doesn't run into a wall or himself, for example. Yeah, Paulie needs glasses, that's right.

Well, anyhow, it's a game that's fun, if you haven't played snake for ages.

Now, this is a game that brings back fond memories of sitting in front of the computer, excited by what the newest technology had in store. This is one of those games that takes you on an adventure and stimulates the imagination--and if a 21st century player can get past the older-style graphics and all, it's still good for some vintage entertainment. The graphics are pretty good for the time, and for an RPG this game offers quite a variety of scenarios and missions. There is a storyline, which is great for people who enjoy having missions and campaigns, but this isn't Civilization II or Caesar or Age of Empires. If you want a skirmish-based or building simulation game then try out one of those three. But for something a little different and definitely RPG, then do give this one a try.

You still have lots of choices to make and freedom in the game, and you get to experience many different positions in Roman society as you make your miraculous journey from slave to Emperor. If you liked "Adventures of Robin Hood" you might like this game, which is based on the same game engine. The fun thing about games like this is that you can play it many times and try out different choices along the way and end up with various outcomes. I've only recently discovered (or rediscovered as it were) the RPG genre, which if anything seems to be less common nowadays than it was when I was growing up in the early 90s, although the Fallout trilogy is out there and seems to be selling fine.

Well, this IS the 21st century, so rather than read my ramblings about this game, why not look it up on YouTube! As of August 24, 2009, you have a great game walkthrought available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6m3BcJgc4M&feature=PlayList&p=CA22C8FF25A28D8D&index=0 Watch a bit of the various videos and enjoy the British commentary, it's fun just to listen to and you get a great demo of the game.

Random fact: the Western Roman Empire came to an end in the late 5th century, yet the East Roman Empire survived until the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. The East Roman/Byzantine Empire even retook Rome and all of Italy in the middle of the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I.
