You're an English guy in the Middle-Ages, about the 12th century, who has a mission. You have to build a castle and defend it. Against whom? Against the Celts offcourse!
It's a lot of fun to build your castle, you can actually see the people working on the variety of castle parts.
Like some noble, you have to make decisions, some are very important. These decisions can affect your status in the eyes of your people, the church or other nobles.
The game is allright, it's very fun to play this game, I think it's one of the first real strategy games in the game history.
Graphics are ok, Sounds could be worse and the gameplay |

Castles is an old dos game where you need to build a castle or castles and all the while defend them from enemy attacks. In this game you'll need to lay a foundation, hire workers to build, and hire archers and infantry to defend your castle. All the while you have to keep the nobles, church, and peasants happy. When starting the game you can do a one, three, or eight castle campaign, and choose from 4 different difficulty levels. Each castle you build in the multi-castle campaigns gets harder and harder to defend.
Castles is a pretty simple game to play, assigning workers to build the walls is as simple as a click then designating the number you want on each section. You'll have to keep an eye on how many workers and soldiers you have and how much they are getting paid. Don't spend more than you can afford. You'll also have to deal with demands from the citizens and make the hard decisions on how to handle their complaints.
If you enjoy building games like civilizations or sim city then you will probably like castles. Because Castles is a relatively simple game it's easy to learn. For the most part your just going to watch as the castle gets built and then switching the labor to different parts as sections of the castle are built, while getting interrupted now and then for battles and dialog from one of your people.
I for one enjoy this game, its simple play can be kind of refreshing to other building games where you have to keep track of a thousand different things. I've played an eight castle campaign, and the later castles can be quite challenging to hold. The main drawback to this game is that you don't have any control over the dialog from the monthly visitors (it's all random), and I think it would be also be nice if as well as defending your own keep you could send your infantry off to try to attack another keep or actually playing out some of these dialogs instead of events just happening. But overall I'd recommend this if you like building game. The graphics aren't that bad either. |
